Can I Combine Human Lyrics with AI Instrumentals?
AI Q & A

A music copyright is not about asking whether you used AI. Is is about identifying what part of the song is truly human, documenting it, and filing a registration that claims only that human contribution.
What usually counts as human contribution
- Human-written lyrics
- Human-created melody or harmony
- Human arrangement decisions
- Human vocal or instrumental performance
- Human creative editing, production, or mixing decisions
What often creates problems
- AI-generated lyrics claimed as if human-written
- AI-generated melody claimed without limitation
- AI-generated lead vocals treated as human authorship
- Overbroad fillings that do not distinguish human from machine
An example: A human may have written the lyrics but used AI-generated instrumentals. Or the other way around.
You should separate the two layers. Once you do that, the next step is choosing the correct path in the registration system.
If you want to register the sound recording and the underlying music or lyrics in one application, select Sound Recording as the type of work and then identify sound recording plus music and/or lyrics in the author-created section.
If you filing is trying to cover the master plus the underlying music/lyrics together, structure it like a sound recording and describe the extra claim elements carefully.
